Membership Education- Revamped

By: Emily Fitch (Membership Head FA'07 SP'08)

This year we completely redid our membership program. Missa (our Vice President of Membership) and I worked together this year to make the program shorter and easier on our candidates. In the past the program lasted 7 or 8 weeks and consisted of 3 tests. There was so much information on each test that it was very difficult for the candidates to remember it all, and they seemed to have difficulty retaining the information past candidacy.
Our revisions made it more like a class where you get a grade at the end of the semester and have to pass with a 90% or higher. There are a total of 400 points and 25 extra credit points possible. We made 5 quizzes, one for each chapter of the education program, that are each worth 50 points. Then there are in lesson worksheets that they can fill out during the lessons which are each worth 10 points. These in lesson worksheets reiterate the very important points like where national headquarters is located and who Wava is. We also made up workbooks for each chapter which they are to do at home in their free time. These are worth 20 points each and are just to add more repetition so they will hopefully actually learn the information in the program not just memorize it for the quiz then forget it right after. We also have a review session between each lesson and quiz which are worth 5 extra credit points. In these we play games like jeopardy or family feud which help the candidates know what else they need to study. We are working on quiz three right now and so far the new method is working great. Since this is the first semester with the new program we are just trying it out, but hopefully if it continues to go well we will use it for many years to come.
